Controller staying longer

I recently came across an article about controller staying longer after retirement. I can understand the reason behind it, but is this a good idea? I spoke to a controler who was before retirement and he said that he's not in the shape he was 20 years ago. What do you think?

I think staying on as a controller past the traditional retirement age has its pros and cons.
I'd say the experience and institutional knowledge older controllers possess are invaluable, especially in complex airspace!
They've seen it all and can bring a steady hand to challenging situations.
But I also understand your friend's perspective because the job is incredibly demanding, both mentally and physically.
The job requires sharp focus and quick decision-making for hours and that can also be challenging with age.
I think the ongoing assessments are key to make sure they're still performing at peak!

I see both sides, experienced controllers bring a lot of knowledge, but the job is very demanding mentally and physically. Its a very tricky situation, I know most would say they'd go as soon as they're eligible. Ive read that article too.

Both replies make good points about the balance between experience and stamina. I think the real value is finding ways to keep the experience around in training or development roles. This way you get the benefit of their knowledge without putting them back in a high pressure seat.
