I was wondering about the Z codes and how they come to be. ZLA makes sense, it's Los Angeles, but what about something like ZJX? If I didn't know I would never guess Jacksonville.

well, the 'Z' in ZJX stands for Center, which is the common term for an Air Route Traffic Control Center. The other two letters are a code for the city or region. You're right that ZJX is not a common abbreviation, but the 'JX' most likely comes from Jacksonville.
There are a bunch of codes like this that don't match the standard airport codes, so you often just have to learn them

I get that, but it got me confused and I was wondering if there's some other rule or way to name them that I didn't know about. Thanks for clearing things up.
